Active in the sense of responding to each keystroke.

Character-by-character interactive maths system, running on a modified XDS 930 at Dept. of Mathematics UC Berkeley under the time-sharing systm of Lampson and Deutsch

Developed by Rene de Vogelaere at Project MAC MIT, at the MC at Amsterdam and at Berkley, thereby being exposed to the major strands of language design thought at the time (quite unique).

From Sammet 1971:
"A simple on-line system for use by students on mathematical problems with the objective of
permitting experimentation with rounding errors and alternate algorithms"

As the system responded character-by-character, and so was (with the CFS) a generation ahead of the JOSS systems, while a degree of direct interaction with and manipulation of the actual data structures themselves anticipated the features of such systems as MATLAB.
