HP3000 home page In the meantime, the HP software designers, many of them from a Burroughs background, set out to design the system's software. Burroughs' operating system, the MCP, was written in a high-level language called "ESPOL", a special version of its ALGOL language. In a similar manner, HP began to design POS (Primary Operating System) in another variant of ALGOL that they dubbed SPL, for Systems Programming Language.
