Example of a Sampled-Data System
This section contains a description of a synchronization problem and its solution using BLODI-G. Figures 4-7 were obtained by requesting a microfilm copy of the state of the scope face at intermediate stages in the design of the synchronization system. Figure 4 contains two stations (STN) interconnected with path delays (DEL). A disturbance generator box (GEN) is connected to Station 1 and represents the original signal. In this example the disturbance was a frequency step at time = 0. The additional boxes are required by BLODI-G when plotted output is desired. The amplifier (AMP) boxes give each signal the desired dynamic range. The FOP boxes provide floating point to integer conversion of the samples collected by the MIK box. No connection was made to pin 1 of the MIK box, so all samples are plotted.

Figure 5 illustrates a specific station design. It consists of a voltage controlled oscillator driven by an amplifier. This station diagram was filed in the library as a super, so that it could be used as a basic block in the synchronization simulation displayed in Figure 4.

Initial values were provided for the parameters associated with the various blocks in the diagrams. Figure 6 shows the plotted output after an interaction with the 7094.

The divergence of the two signals in this plot denotes unsatisfactory system design and indicates the need to change some parameter values. After the appropriate changes were made and another interaction executed, the desired response is returned as shown in Figure 7.

The number of iterations required between an initial result and a final satisfactory result depends largely on the complexity of the problem.
