Abstract: A working party of the British Computer Society has designed a facility which allows users to configure their COBOL compilers to accept different dialects of COBOL. The facility, known as the COBOL Language Enhancement Facility (CLEF), was produced in response to users' requirements to enhance their versions of COBOL. This paper reviews the development of CLEF: looking at the users' requirements, identifying design criteria and outlining the design, implementation and evaluation of CLEF
