This article proposes the development of a middle-level programming language PL/B for microprocessors which will provide for the power of an assembly language and the portability of higher level languages such as BASIC. The intention is to provide an assembly language programmer with the ability to write a program in an assembly-like language which will compile, not be interpreted, into machine code for execution. The author states that as a language, PL/B will be as difficult as programming in assembler, but will have the advantage of portability.
The proposal describes PL/B in assembly language terms and concludes with a discussion on how the language may be implemented. The article is worthwhile reading for the serious microprocessor programmer, one who desires more power and faster execution than a BASIC interpreter provides.
