Further, the described operational use would suggest that it has limitations when dealing with large databases. (For six objects with 5 to 12 attributes each, 15 million characters, there were long response times (seven minutes) for what seems to be a straightforward query.) However, the characteristics of the computer (IRIS 80) are not given, nor are they known to this reviewer. There are no revolutionary concepts involved here, the main point is that it is yet another implementation of Dr. Codd's Relational DBMS revolution. Hopefully, enough experience will be gained so that major implementations will be forthcoming. It is curious that the implementers should have built an interface to COBOL! There would seem to be some form of intellectual contradiction here. D. A. Oakes, Willowdale, Ont., Canada in ACM Computing Reviews 20(06) June 1979 view details |
