It is necessary to communicate to FLOWTRACE the nature of the source language. This is accomplished by describing the language in a series of descriptors within a metalanguage ("higher language") called STRIP. These descriptors are of two classes:
    (a) Format descriptors describe the format of the source statements.
    (b) Model descriptors (or models) describe the nature of individual control statements. One model is required for each source control statement type to be flowcharted, or variant thereof. Extract: Description
In STRIP, models are used to describe the specifics of a source language. Format descriptors are used to describe the generalities, specifically the format of the language and certain other features. All format descriptors begin with a dot in column 1, followed immediately by an appropriate  word. Succeeding fields are free-form, except that certain subfields must be grouped. Where blank spaces appear between groups, any number of blanks may appear.
