L., Jr., review of Valliere 1961 view details Abstract: This article describes an assembly routine for an IBM 650 card data processing system developed by Ed Valliere, Jr., computer programming manager at Helene Curtis Industries. All data processing for the five main divisions of Helene Curtis is handled centrally at 22,000 point installations with a staff of 40 people headed by Ed Valliere, Sr. Order billing alone involves 35,000 customers and 350,000 invoices annually. The assembly program, called Codematic, has allowed Ed Valliere, Jr. and one assistant to program and maintain some 110 applications for two data processing systems.

The Codematic system is an automatic optimum address coding system which produces machine language programs. The article includes a listing of the Codematic program, a block diagram and operating instructions, as well as brief descriptions of the order writing and inventory control applications in which Codematic coded programs are used. Mr. Valliere, Jr. contends that the Codematic system not only simplifies program writing, but produces programs which are easy to read, trace and debug at the computer console.
