Marchuk and Ershov system(ID:7659/)Mathematical manipulation system with graphical assistance developed by Ershov and Marchuk References: in Kalenich W.A. (ed), Proceedings IFIP Congress (New York, May 24-29, 1965), Spartan Books, New York, 1965. view details Marchuk and Ershov's system According to Marehuk and Ershov (1965), " . . . the problem of solving differential equations comprises at least two-thirds of all problems arising in engineering and scientific calculations." Thus they proposed (in 1965) to construct a nonclosed programming system based on a continuous man-machine interaction to aid in the solution of differential equations. In this problem area they plan to have the human make such decisions as: specification of rules, variable substitution, and direction of analytical transformation to reduce the problem to a canonical form; information on partition of the operator of the equation into elementary ones; and which difference scheme is preferred for a given elementary operator. This system is not yet implemented. Much work has been done in developing hardware and software to provide the on-line environment necessary to such a project, but so far only teletypes and typewriters are used as terminals. Graphic terminals and further work on interactive solution of differential equations are planned. in [ACM] ACM Computing Surveys 2(4) Dec1970 view details |
