DR. VICTOR R. BASILI

Dr. Victor R. Basili is a Professor of Computer Science at the University of Maryland, College Park, the Executive Director of the Fraunhofer Center - Maryland, and one of the founders and principals in the Software Engineering Laboratory (SEL). He works on measuring, evaluating, and improving the software development process and product and has consulted for many organizations, including AT&T, Boeing, Daimler-Chrysler, Ericsson, FAA, GE, GTE, IBM, Lucent, MCC, Motorola, NRL, NSWC, and NASA.

He is a recipient of a 1989 NASA Group Achievement Award, a 1990 NASA/GSFC Productivity Improvement and Quality Enhancement Award, the 1997 Award for Outstanding Achievement in Mathematics and Computer Science by the Washington Academy of Sciences, and the 2000 Outstanding Research Award from ACM SIGSOFT. Dr. Basili has authored over 160 journal and refereed conference papers, has served as Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Transactions on Software Engineering, and as Program Chair and General Chair of the 6th and 15th International Conference on Software Engineering, respectively. He is co-editor-in-chief of the International Journal of Empirical Software Engineering, published by Kluwer. He is an IEEE and ACM Fellow.

Earlier biography: Victor R Basili has been a member of the
faculty of the Department of Computer
Science at the University of Maryland
since 1970, where he is presently an
associate professor. From 1963 to 1967 he
taught in the mathematics and computer
science department at Providence College.
Providence, Rhode Island. He has been involved
in the deign and development of
several software projects, including the
SIMPL family of structured programming languages, the graph
algorithmic language, Grad, and the SL/1 language for the
CDC Star. Currently he is involved in the measurement and
evaluation of software development at the NASAIGoddard
Space Flight Center.

Basili has acted as a consultant for several industrial organizations and government agencies, including IBM, GE, CSC, NRL, NSWC.,and NASA. He is a member of ACM, the IEEE Computer Society, and the American Assodation of University Professors. He received his BS degree in mathematics from Fordharn College, his MS in mathematics from Syracuse University, and his PhD in computer science from the University of Texas at Austin, in 1961,1963. and 1970, respectively.
