It began with a theoretical approach to coding, so by the time the first 701 was delivered to IBM Poughkeepsie Dec. 20, 1952 it only took 4 months to implement. (in use April 1953) Used a library system developed by McLelland based on that of Wilkes called Regional Assembly, hence the assembler was also called the Regional Assembly Lanugage or RAL.
