New Programming Language. IBM's original (temporary) name for PL/I, changed partly owing to conflict with England's "National Physical Laboratory", but mainly because the SHARE committee thought it silly to have a language named "New" when the hoped to have it last a while.

MPL and MPPL were considered before settling on PL/I.
