"A Relational Problem Definition Language For Structured Data Processing" pp375-384 view details Abstract: A relational problem definition language for transaction-oriented data processing systems is described and is shown to be relationally complete. Methods are given for converting a problem statement written in this language into a network of processes and files; this network representation can be optimized to produce an efficient implementation of the problem using any available data management software. In effect, this approach allows the automatic reorganization of application programs to provide efficient operation in a changing environment; no alteration of the original problem statement is required.

R. review of Beck Trans 1980 view details Abstract: The author derives a set of primitive operations on tuples, showing "that these operations are necessary and sufficient for the implementation of any language equivalent in power to the relational algebra." The optimization processes presented lead directly to implementation on existing file management systems or DBMS. This would allow a user to implement different systems without changes at the user interface level, something that is plaguing the data processing industry today; namely, maintenance.

    "This approach should yield great benefits in reduced cost and increased flexibility of implementation." This reviewer agrees whole-heartedly and hopes others will undertake some of the items on the list for future directions in the area of research the author has outlined.
