Although author languages and authoring systems have been distinguished from each other, author languages have historically provided the foundation upon which authoring systems are built. The first identifiable author language, TIP (Translator for Interactive Programs) was developed for an IBM 650 around 1960 and later evolved into the first version of the COURSEWRITER language.

COURSEWRITER was a "frame-oriented" language in which material was organized in terms of frames--each frame included text or questions, answer matches, and branching logic.
