Abstract: This paper is concerned with the nature of graphic languages in interactive machine communication at a graphic console, and corresponds to the notion of a 'discourse language' discussed by Narasimhan (1970). It is in this language that the operator is able to present his problem to the system, by giving commands and directives, and by asking questions. The feature distinguishing a graphic language from other languages for man-machine communication is the use of pictures during the interaction.
