References: The major step forward with version 4 is that it no longer requires the use of an SGI workstation since it has been ported away from the proprietary GL that EGS_Windows_3 used. It can use either OpenGL or Mesa3D. Section 2 gives information on where to get hold of the various software packages required. Using Mesa3D on a Pentium Pro 200 MHz machine running Linux with a Matrox G200 video card, the response of the display is somewhat jerky, but not significantly worse than on the old SGI Rx4400 machine we used to run version 3 on. The response depends greatly on the simulation being displayed and the type of display (wireframe is much faster than transparent surfaces). We expect the performance to be significantly improved by using a 3D video card (eg. Matrox G400) and/or a faster machine. This version of the manual (Nov 1999) should be considered a beta version.
