Abstract: A microinstruction description language called MIDL is introduced. A MIDL description of a microarchitecture defines the semantics and triggering conditions of all microoperations. It also defines operand selection. MIDL incorporates a timing model that allows detailed specification of the timing of each microoperation, and a sequencing model that allows the description of many different sequencing schemes.
